Re: Bought a Varadero (XL125)
Bike arrived this morning at 8am.
Battery was near flat, just enough power to check the milage 6404
Manual and unused toolkit were with the bike
Charged battery and opened the fuel drains on the carbs but nothing came out.
Drained tank of 10L of ~2014 petrol, removed tank and air box then sprayed fresh fuel into the carb inlets to see if it would start. It did start but soon cut out as expected.
removed the carbs and opened the bowls to find them full of old fuel and green gunge blocking the jets and drain, cleaned the carbs and fitted the closest new jets I had. front carb are the same, rear carb next size up. loosely connected the tank and put in a few liters of fresh super. bike starts and runs.
Stripped the front fairings to replace the non working horn with one of a dual tone set off a old Passat iirc, I'll fit the other one to my yellow "90"
Bike is rebuilt, just needs insuring, MOT and tax.
The only things it might fail on are i'm not sure about the fork seals. One looks poor, though they don't seem to be leaking and the drive chain has a bit of rust. Ohh and it wants a wash.
Could do with new tyres, the back is an original Bridgestone Trail Wing which looks "Plasticy" the front is a Bridgestone Battlax BT45.

Be careful of that chain, it's likely to wear very quickly and get very hot.

BT45s are great tyres but may be a bit over the top on a 125.

Re: Bought a Varadero (XL125)
The BT45 looks fine but that possibly original trail wing needs to go, haven't ridden it yet just pushed it to the test center as its not that far.
Popped it in to my old fashioned MOT place, failed on fork seals, hardly surprising as it has been laid up over two years. just need to sort it out and get it retested.

Re: Bought a Varadero (XL125)
Added it to my multibike policy yesterday and rode it for the first time to the MOT place I use.
Passed retest, so took it out for a little run as I haven't changed the oil and filters yet.
Ordered a Givi Monokey plate for my topbox (got a second hand BMW kit for £15 as a bracket had been lost)
Really needs a bigger screen, a centerstand and I wouldn't mind a set of crash bars for the fairings.

Re: Bought a Varadero (XL125)
Changed the Honda/Givi Monolock plate to a Monokey plate, need the extended rubbers (Z126A) so I can fit my Outback top box or it rattles about. I've been using foam rubber over the rubbers on the C90 but I could do with a better solution.
Givi UK say the rubbers needed with the Outback top boxes don't exist but I think I've found somewhere local that might have them, failing that need to order them from Germany or make a mold and cast my own
The bike has a Honda adapter between the rack and the Givi plate that allows some side to side movement of the box, with a Buna N elastomer that acts as a damper. I've just removed 4 washers and tightened the bolts down for now to disable it., I need slightly shorter stainless bolts, washers and nuts anyway as they've rusted up.
Fitting the alarm/immobiliser over the weekend, was going to fit a Cat2 immobiliser and a Cat2-1 Alarm the same as I use on my Cubs, but I bought a used one from a breaker and the remote was broken so its going back and I've bought a Cat1 system instead, I've gone through the loom and made a table of which wire goes to which pin of the connector to make it easier for future maintenance/fault finding as once you cut the ends off the wires you don't know what they are for as they are all black with a number on the tip of the wire.
Got a flip up tall touring screen on order from Skidmarx and I've bought a Pyramid Extenda Fenda, used centerstand, and SW Motech crashbars.
Would have prefered the Ermax screen but having difficulty finding one, all mods declared anyway.
Wouldn't mind some hard panniers but just going to use my Ortlieb Moto throw overs for now, thinking of handguards, and testing a HID setup like I have on the Yellow "90".

Re: Bought a Varadero (XL125)
Seen a few modified with extras for touring use, looks to me they could be really useful, they have really good fuel economy and a big tank. I did take out a brand new one to test, but with mixed results, the engine was very tight, so did not strain it. There is a very good forum site, the engine is really strong.

Re: Bought a Varadero (XL125)
Just needs tidying up really, exhaust heat shield could do with blasting/powdercoat.
I have a New Old Stock Datatool Digi gear indicator I've decided to fit,as sometimes I'm unsure what gear I'm in. It is the cable speedo version which is handy as although my bike has an electric speedo, the sender is on the front wheel hub meaning it needs programming on the road and my engine doesnt have the gearbox output shaft speed sensor. This way I can fit its own hall effect sensor to the rear brake disc so it can be set up on the center stand. I've started making a loom for it using the mini spade connectors the same as the plugs on the honda loom, A 6 pole for the display, 3 pin for the speed sensor and a 2 pin for the programing switch so I can remove the switch when its not needed as its only used for programming the unit if you change the sprocket sizes.
