I have managed to get rid of most of the goo.

I surmised that if it it came from petrol then it must be soluble in petrol so I submerged the lot in 10 litres of old petrol overnight.

Two problems (at least).

1) the pilot jets are the 'push in' supposedly fixed for life type

2) the float pivot pins are stuck fast and I dare not start trying to tap them out with a hammer and punch for fear of snapping off the casting support legs.

For the first problem I could try 'wheedling' them out with circular grip pliers as I'm pretty certain the emulsion (sideways) holes will be plugged because the main jet emission tube holes were all solid.

For the second problem, I could replace the floats and so cut off the float with a diamond wheel and then have just the pin left and this could be gripped with small vice grips and worked back and forth to free them with a liberal coating of release fluid and perhaps a touch of heat.

Of course the accelerator pump diaphragm is shot and Im not sure if a replacement is available and I have yet to test the vacuum actuator or the solenoid actuator.

Naturally Im beginning to consider making a 4 branch manifold and sticking a single SU carburettor on the blessed thing.

Joking aside (although with Dave possibly not)
That's what Elford did to turbocharge the early RX7's junk the original fit an SU (except not the 4 branch manifold 2 in there case i think. :lol: )
I'm sure ive still got the SU carb off one in the garage somewhere.

Twin SUs on a 12b were a good upgrade , my 13b na or EGI went better with a Rotechnics exhaust manifold plus induction kit.

I’ve got a spare engine arriving today, so I’ll be having a squint into the innards just for educational reasons.

I suspect the driveline shock absorber springs on my original motor have departed their one piece construction.

Apparently those damn yankees liked to drag race the 750 auto’s away from the lights by holding on the rear brake and winding up the motor and then releasing the rear brake thus getting a Mad Max spinning rear wheel getaway. This is rather hard on the driveline shock absorbers which are designed to provide a Cadillac smooth transmission experience.

I do have the jets soaking in a jar of thinners, it has worked on the main jets but the emulsion tube sideways holes needed poking clear.

3 of the 4 float needles have freed off so far but one is still stuck and another has a stuck spring pin.

The slides have freed off, there is a lot of crap on the needles so I may need to remove the needle jets too. I’m still trying desperately not to split the bank of 4 into individual carbs as I just know they will be a nightmare to reassemble.

I wonder how much a half decent SU will cost?

There was me all happy as found (another) E/S battery cover on eBay which turned up today.

Now I have to unearth the C90 to fit it. :D

Number 4 has a little scoring on the piston and the top ring is slightly pinned at one end, but the bores are fine and still show some cross hatching hone marks.

Yes the oils are better Mobil 1`s mission statement is zero ware , the last Porsche to win at Le Mans ran on the same stuff you can buy in Halfords .that was the Porsche with the standard V4 2litre engine :o and hybrid system .
