Re: mpg
Not much progress indeed , i used to do a beer and baccy run Dover/Calais once a month in a Citroen BX17 RD
60 MPG at mostly 80MPH on the motorways. 4 people and a boot full of merchandise.
I remember overtaking a guy on the M25 during a storm who was riding a 250N superdream thinking i'm getting better MPG buying cheaper fuel than he is and i'm nice and dry.
I still wonder why i ride motorcycles

Re: mpg
This is so true! I had a BX19 Estate, did one or two duty free runs a year and also got fab MPG out of it. It was non turbo. Lovely car.loadedtoad wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 8:15 pmNot much progress indeed , i used to do a beer and baccy run Dover/Calais once a month in a Citroen BX17 RD

And when my Virago was my only 'big' bike, I did indeed used to think "It's cheaper to take the car" and often did.
The 1200cc Harley is EFI, and I can get up to 49 mpg, whereas two up into a headwind, caning it on a motorway, I once got 30mpg out of the Virago 535!

Re: mpg
I'm a bit of a fan of PSA diesel engines, had a ZX TD Volcane which got traded in for a Berlingo 2.0 Hdi in 2005. Used to hammer it down to SW France quite often and it would return 65mpg. It's a bit battered now but will be back in regular use as my Cub transporter for this year for any of our events.
I was a self employed courier in the early 80's (tis where Bikerbaker came from) and had 2 and 4 cylinder cars and bikes all air cooled. If I had anything long distance overnight it would get done in the Citroen Dyane because that had the best fuel consumption.

Re: mpg
My 1999 VW Mk3 1.9 tdi Golf Estate averaged 60 mpg.My main reason for changing it was the fact it only had one airbag, the drivers, which I thought was a bit unfair to my wife if I ever had an accident. So I went for a 2007 2.0 tdi Mk5 one, this was 7 years ago. This has 6 airbags,so should be safer if the worst were to happen.I also figured that during the 8 years between the two VW would have I improved the efficiency of the engine and despite fitting a catalytic converter fuel consumption would be a about the same. Not so the 2.0 tdi only manages 50 mpg average .

Re: mpg
Yes have to agree regarding my earlier post about my BX17 RD with a regular 60MPG
Have stuck with PSA engines having a Peugeot 405 Turbo diesel after the BX and currently
driving a 406 HDI, despite all the modern technology the exhaust Catalyst the DPF all the weight of the safety systems
and driving comforts lucky to get 55 mpg out of it.
Having said that if i was involved in a motorway pile up at 80MPH i'd prefer to be in the 406
Just for the record in 1990 had a front tyre blowout at about 80 on a BMW R75/7 on the M11 wish i'd took the car that morning

Re: mpg
Right, driving back home from Manchester Airport to Wales, my Honda Insight averaged 118 mpg on the M56 which dropped to 89.9 mpg when it got hilly around these parts. Life time average for the car is 73,9 mpg.
Ditto but mine was a 2cv, I remember a long job down to the West Country, so took the 2cv and the Wife and made a weekend of it.bikerbaker wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 4:51 pm

Re: mpg
Really wanted one but they were super rare in the 70's. I once saw one in a (closed) antique shop in Beer, might just have been the shell.
