Honda CG125 neutral switch.

Post by Harps18TV » Sat Feb 29, 2020 2:09 pm

I have a 1978 CG & the neutral switch seems to have given up - if I earth the wire from it the light comes on, so it must be the switch.
Does anyone know how to get the switch out please? On most other Hondas there seems to be a small retaining clip but nothing on the CG & the manual only covers the splitting of the gearbox & it looks like that is the only way but that seems a bit of a job! I have had a grip on the switch but it will not move at all & I don`t want to put a lot of force on it & have to split the engine if I break it totally.
If the gearbox has to be split, then the switch can wait!
Can anyone say for certain please?

I think that it should "just pull out" as I have just seen that there is a rubber retainer in the outside case but the switch is a wee bit tight. Maybe after a run when the alloy case expands a bit........... after all, it`s been in there for 42 years!

Hi Harps, looking at my Honda workshop manual it seems that it should just pull out. There is an O ring on the "shaft" of the component, which is no doubt now sticking a bit after all these years, so I would try to introduce some releasing fluid into the housing to loosen the grip. There should be a flat which might help you to rotate it a little, again, to loosen it's grip. Possibly using a hot air gun briefly on the surrounding metal could help. Ultimately, if it's failed and needs replacing, it won't matter if a little damage occurs in getting it out. Are you sure the wire, which is held by spring pressure, is making a good contact? Good luck, Mickb.

Hi Mickb, thanks for your reply & I think it should pull out but there`s not a lot to get hold of & I`ve already taken the edges off a bit by using pliers to try to hold/pull it. I just dont want to break the top off & then have to split the engine. The wire has been removed a few times & so should be making a good contact - when I earthed it the neutral bulb lit straight away. Maybe after a bit of use it might start to work again (wishful thinking?), as the bike hasn`t been used since 1982 & only has less than 6K miles on it!
I`ll probably leave it alone until I have put a few miles on it once it`s on the road.
I might try your idea of the hot air gun when i`ve done a few other jobs on the bike. :)

Can confirm they just pull out, there is a 0 ring half way down the shaft that keeps them in place,
It doesn't have a bracket like the c90 12v has,
Put a continuity test on your old one and put it in gear first before removal, just to check,
I have 5 spare motors up here if you need a switch.
