Years ago Essex Police reintroduced motorcycles to traffic police (having got rid of them as fleet could purchase a Rover 414 which carried 2 coppers and equipment, for less than a solo. However when escort/rapid deployment duties where needed they sub contracted to the Met Police Solos as again a cheaper option for things like the Southend air show)
So Essex bought all of Jersey Police's Pans as they were all low mileage/over serviced due to the Islands size
Never knew that. I did see a covert Essex copper on (I think) an S1000RR on the A120 last year. Sneaky B*****ds. :D

My 1990 R80RT

Has 98.000 miles on clock. Same clutch - did bearings in gearbox at 80k - rubber cush drive in shaft is noisy - but will not cost a fortune to repair (pennys in real terms).

Not had engine apart - same starter - have rebuilt carbs with new rubber kits. Two batteries - lots of tyres and brake pads at front.

Keep looking at R1150RTs - but I doubt they will be so good or so simple to repair?

I think the earlier models from 80/90s had better build quality as there was something to prove and developed for a home market.

BMW (as others) introduced to many variants to try and mass conquer the market outsourcing build.

My mate has an 1150 GS, 48K miles (I recall) but been a commuter in the past. Now rarely used so tail end of ladt year oil slight glass blew out (fixed at 21st Moto by an ex BMW mechanic) bill nearly £800.

Storm Ciaran it blew over, broken nearside plastics & a dent in the tank. BMW dont repair tanks cost to fix £1700.

Now an insurance write off, but he may buy it back as he can live with the crap finish due to little riding nowadays and couldn't get a replacement for similar monies (I'm guessing 5/600£ buy back)

To be honest I don't use mine much now.

I used the ~BMW for commuting into a city - and when it was newish - me and wifey used to go on three week camping trips on it. Round the UK coast - to France and Germany.

It sits idle in my garage at home - most the going to work - 1.8mile each way - I do on my Honda AFS 110i

Thought about selling the BMW - but I may use it more when/if I retire....?

My pennies worth.
I enjoyed my old bmw r80/7’s etc......ok to work on, but my recent F650Gs (800cc twin) was a different beast.
Everything about it was great, covered distance lovely....nice relaxed engine, but off the throttle it was that snatchy it was bloody not far off been dangerous in 1st gear no matter how careful I was. I had to buy a plug in gizmo from motorworks to help prevent this. Another problem was if turned off via the kill switch it didn’t like to start back up. This model is also well known for just cutting out when you least expect it at two lights, junctions etc. Last time it cut out the abs stopped working.
Such a shame, because I loved it. Also known for the steering bearings failing regularly.

My F800 was initially very snatchy and I complained when I took it for it's first service. Dpn't know what they did but it was instantly better and had no problems in the 15,000 miles since, especially in the last 18 months when it hasn't turned a wheel.

Worst thing about it - it eats dipped beam bulbs and the clip that holds the bulb in is a joke.

Steering head bearings though are slightly notchy as reported by it's last health check. I'll get that done at a dealer before I try riding it again, then decide whether to keep it.

My brand new F800GS was an utter piece of crap. I hated the thing. It should have been soooo good. But nope it was shit. I sold it after 2 1/2 year with less than 2000mls on the clock. The subsequent 3 Boxers, two of which I still own, are utterly brilliant bikes.

Hi Bogger,
What rattled your cage with f800gs? I lost confidence in mine and given currently I can’t afford bmw service costs I got shut.

What boxers you got? I like the old boxers, although they’re currently rising out of my price range. It’s a good 15 years since I sold my last. Love them.

BMW F800   . The seat was terrible, the worst I've ever sat on. After 40mls my arse and bo***cks had gone numb. Useless fueling at lower throttle openings. It was like a switch rather than a throttle. Around town I was gripping the throttle so hard to try to stop the snatchyness I got arm pump. The standard screen is the worst screen in the world ever. I rode the 26miles back from the dealer at low speeds and promptly took it off in disgust. I rang and enquired about the price of a taller screen. A shade under £300 robbing *&*&^%^&*. No I didn't buy one. The bike was just a real disappointment.
I vowed never to buy a new bike again. So I bought an old 1996 R1100RS. I collected it from Wakefield and rode it down the M62 to Warrington. What a revelation. Brilliant machine, loved it. I did trade it in for an R1200ST. Which is basically very similar to the 1100 but a bit better in in every department. Still got it. I then happened upon an older R80RT with 26000 miles on. It was cheap £1300 Mrs Bogger wasn't happy but I bought that and still have it. Love it to bits. Not powerful, but still fast and so smooth, with loads of torque :D .
