Gambia Motorbike ride

Gambia Motorbike ride

Just returned from 2 weeks in The Gambia where we had a great time. When we were there I got friendly with Baba Touray the local Police Sergeant who carries out his duties on a police motorbike. He said that he could use the bike privately & would take me for a ride. So the next day on his day off, he collected me from the hotel in his civilian clothes I jumped on the back of the bike & we went for a ride to Tanji a big fish market about 15 miles away.

He said that the bike was made in China especially for the Gambian Police, she ran very well & it was very comfortable on the back. The engine looked like a water cooled twin & I was surprised to hear that it was a125cc.

The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa & is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal, with the exception of its western coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. We headed south along the coast, it was a beautiful road with bush on one side & the Atlantic on the other. He took me to Tanji a big fish market about 15 miles away & we parked outside the police post. The market is located along the beach & is supplied by small fishing boats anchored in the sea, the women wade out, collect the fish in baskets, take them to be sold at the market & for every basket they carry the are given one fish.

Here are some photos, by the way the lady with Baba is Sheila:-

In 1996 i helped to take 6 CG125's out to the Gambia bought and mended where needed by 4 of us, we did all sorts of stuff the year before to get funds.
We raised 5grand to pay for getting there in a donated Land Rover with trailer, these along with the bikes were then donated to the Local medics, we spent a week with the locals and had a wonderful time.Lovely people who would give you their last bite to eat..
Made me feel good for years doing it, and we also had a lot of fun. Would do some thing like it again if i was younger.
Lyn.
