"The engine is to quiet. I tried to kick it alive several times in traffic, but it was already running"

What is the story behind Jalopy/Jalopnik?

The same principle as the two mentioned motorcycle magazines.

Essentially a cheaply-produced A5 size magazine that was based around owners' submitted reviews of their own cars.

All 3 were a mine of real-world information in the pre-internet era. 8-)

But does the word "Jalopy" have a meaning? I know the American Car Magazine "Jalopnik"

Edit: Googled it.
A decrepit car is one that is often old and damaged and is in a barely functional state. Numerous slang terms are used to describe such cars, which vary by country and region, including beater, jalopy and banger.
Jalopy may refer to:
Automobiles

An old car
Lemon (automobile), a defective automobile
Rat rod, an updated term for a modern interpretation of a jalopy, Not to be confused with a traditional hot rod.

I used to read the UBG and UMG A5 sized magazines virtually every month.

I even bought and read a good selection of the 4 wheeled version, Jalopy. 8-)

Used to contribute often to the Used Motorcycle Guide, in Bill Fowlers day, when it was independent. Even had my yellow Commando 750 Roadster featured as cover bike twice. Think one of the people he started the mag with took the idea to a major publisher & the Used Bike Guide was born, similar layout, but it accepted industry ads & never had the edge/bite of UMG.
Eventually Fowler sold the UMG to the 'Gang of Three', & it staggered along for a while. I did a few articles for them. But I think in the end it got taken over by the UBG.
Have a feeling that Jalopy was started by Mark Williams, of 'Bike fame.
