Quite right Matt. If it was revealed it wouldn't be a reserve any more, it would be a starting bid!!
Anyone who asks me what the reserve is on a sale gets politely pointed to a dictionary!! :D

Nice to see you're not going to give it away Matt!

Regards Ebay in general, excuse me for being a bit dense, but I really don't get this Ebay reserve malarky.
If there's been an offer outside of Ebay, of say £1300, and it's not up to the reserve, wouldn't it be better to get that translated into a firm bid? To that end, wouldn't it be better to now declare the reserve, so the price can move upwards off of that?
I would have thought that the higher it goes early on in the auction, the more it can go up. I just see it as a waste of everybody's time running an auction at a price so much lower than what you will take for it.
Appreciated, if you put say £1500 on it, it might not get any bids, and that it has to start somewhere, and of course bidding can escalate. But with offers of £1300 or so, I would have thought to get the price as high as I can, as early as I can, Otherwise a sniper (like myself) might just steal it at the reserve! :D :D :D :D
P.s, I'm not bidding on this, honestly.

my experience of selling on ebay newt, from horseboxes to motorbikes to piles of scrap, bids tend to go silly in the last few seconds if people want it, i think this will sell for strong money but i think £1300 is a very good price for it, can it really sell for more than that? really? :|

I agree. I start everthing at a quid to generate watchers. There's always an initial flurry of bids, then nothing happens, then the non-snipers hit it in the last minute, and sometimes a snipe will take it in the last four seconds.

Nothing wrong with a sniping tool - the person who is willing to pay the most, wins. It's just a precalculated decision, like a sealed bid system. It probably helps eliminate dreamers & drunks from the equation.

I like what's happening here - kind of inspires me to give my C90 some paint and put it up.

Good luck Matt.

No Movement on it this morning, still got 5 days to go though....

The thing i like about a sniping tool, is it enables me to make a decision in the cold grey light of day as to how much I'm prepared to pay, and stick to it.
I've bid many times in normal auctions (not on the web, I mean), and I always set myself a limit, and rarely exceed it. For instance if I think an items worth £30, and the bidding goes in £2 increments, I don't want to be the £28 bid, because someone else gets the £30 bid, and I'd have to go £32. So there's a bit of skill there.
However, the auctioneer won't cut the auction short at £20 for a tea break, when there's people willing to pay £30 standing around. Ebay sort of does this with the time thing. Ebay sort of works on the basis people get carried away with it all, swept along with events, and end up paying far more than they intended.
People are getting wise to this now though. Hence the rise in popularity of the sniping tools.

"I got lashed on sherry and bought a stethoscope on Ebay" Syndrome! :D :D :D :D

I've never used one and it hurts to get pipped at the post all the time, so I guess 'if you can't beat them join them!' What's the deal Newt, Annual fee?

No, no fee! When you sign up, you get 5 free credits, you can get more by referring people, or buy them. They only deduct a credit when the bid is successful. Works out about 20p a go.
The hardest part is entrusting them with your Ebay log in details, but it's fine, really.
Here's a link to the one I use, and I can't recommend them enough.

Yeah, Simo Hayha is a real cult figure in the States!
Don't worry about the referral I've plenty of snipes left, and I doubt the email I have for you is the one you'll use.
As I say, it works well for me, the only time items sometimes go for less than I bid, is when the bid increment isn't enough to get my bid in.
The real plus is being able to change your mind and cancel your bid, up to three minutes before the auction ends.
Enjoy!
