ST90 Trailsport Heat Shield

Post by DRThom24 » Mon Jul 18, 2022 11:41 am

Morning folks

I bought myself an ST90 last night. It's a bobby dazzler and I'm well happy.

However, I've had a look at the heat shield/cloth between the frame and exhaust and it looks like it might contain asbestos. As the bike is from 1974, it may well do.

Does anyone know definitively? If I can't find out I'll remove it and replace with modern stuff.

Thanks 🐵👍

Take a scraping and send it off for analysis using a kit bought on Amazon.

That's the standard response whenever I find an artexed ceiling on a job.

8-)

Yeah I thought about doing that but thought I'd ask first as it must have come up before or someone who worked for Honda might have known.

I'll see what replies I get and then order a test kit 🐵👍

Lots of similar shields did from around that period, on cars, trucks, boats as well as bikes.

And lots didn't. It seems a bit of a lottery, much like artex ceilings in fact.

I remember allen millyard used fake coal as heatshield material on his viper build which you could use to replace the asbestos

you will have to trawl for the video but this text:

"So, Millyard gathered more information. A bit of research revealed that the high-temp-tolerant material used to make the fake coals that some people put in their gas fireplaces is made of a very similar material to that used in space shuttle tiles. He got hold of some of those fake coals, sliced them up into tiles, and used high-temp silicon adhesive to affix them to the underside of his heat shielding. At one point, he even demonstrates exactly how heat-resistant they are by sticking a tile on his finger and using a blowtorch, as you do. If that doesn’t get the point across, nothing will."

I saw that video and thought he was mad until it worked. He's a genius. His pushbike is a work of art.

I'll probably just buy some stick on heat shield online and dispose of the original.
