1980 NC50 Express "noped"

Post by Cerberus73 » Mon Feb 20, 2012 12:21 am

Ok gonna be going to look at a Honda Express ped... guy is asking £125... but I'm gonna really low ball him around say £50-75 quid (75 is about my top dollar on this) do you reckon i would be insulting the fella? i don't wanna be cheeky. but old peds don't make big cash, even local breaker said £50 is top buck for it.

The description on ad goes... project i got 2yrs ago, haven't got round to doing it, was running but needs carb sorting... i was gonna point out that to replace the headlight bulb you need to replace whole headlight unit (not one of hondas better decisions!) and that the starter spring can be iffy after so long (funky clockwork start, wind her up by 3 pumps on a pedal, and let rip) i fancy it cos i had one years back, and my old dear is looking for something cheap to run.. well honda did market this more as a consumer good than a motorcycle, hence the sealed unit light  also twist n go, and it looks like her old raleigh 20 with a engine stuck on it.

I have fond memories of these, my first proper road legal bike was a yellow one of same vintage... this ones orange... yummy! and i had my first "off" on one, going up a hill, 15mph wringing its neck... van parked on my side with caravan mirrors sticking out, my mate on other side of road pissing himself laughing at me, so i turned head to swear at him, and helmet top got clipped by bottom of mirror... me on my arse, laughing me head off as the ped carried on its merry way for a few sec. suffice to say it was sold sharpish and a Kwak AR50 obtained.

what price nostalgia? theres one sat on ebay at moment at 950 quid from some dealer... guy must be mental!

If you don't ask you don't get, just mocked £150 off next week because it's not got not MOT or Tax but that's around £70 so that's £80 saved and he recently fitted a £45 gel battery, best to ask in person and haggle.

They don't all have sealed beams... One provided its headlamp for my CM90 (same size and fitting) before I got into big daft ones, and it used a normal C90 bulb. Back barake makes a good clutch lever for a Cub too.

 I still have the frame and wheels somewhere if you're ever in need.

cheers boo, this is the early ones from 77-80, single speed, sealed beam light... straight bar frame later express II 81 on had a bend in the frame and dinky little leg shields kinda like a chaly had. also motor went from the weird clockwork "starter" to a normal kickstart, and 2 speed transmission. i may just take you up on the offer of the parts if there for the same type with straight frame, as i dunno what state its in till i go look at it. I'm only gonna have it if it aint seized solid, and i can get it cheap as chips. if it has a crap frame and i know one you have is good and same type... could use it as a bargaining point to get it for peanuts.

Old peds are quite popular now as they can be used by a lot of car license holders (cat P), so they will always sell as fuel goes up in price . ;)

That's one of my favourites from project ads "Was running when parked up" (usually 15 years ago). Right, that'll fire straight up then

You're right not to go mad on this, £75 maybe but only if it's largely complete & tidy. It's a nice bit of 80s tat but it will struggle (and ultimately fail) to keep up with the traffic these days. OK for NACC runs and the like but probably not the best thing to send a loved one onto the Queen's highway aboard...

you can get a 70cc big bore conversion cheap, makes it do a bit over 40 depending on lardyness of rider. should be fine for me old mum. either that i have a mate with a 26ft winnebago that has a "garage" think a shed sized space in back! big enough to hold a moped and spare gas etc. so if it don't need much i can always offload it to her, as she was asking if i could pick up a old ped to drive round campground and into whatever town she is near. he also said theres a spare carb with it and other parts, will see after 5 tonight when i go look. all i can do is make a offer and see what he says.

Ah, fair do's. That's more like it. Plenty of head shaking and sucking in air through your teeth then, good luck :D
