Symba at the NEC show

Post by Capitano » Sun Nov 20, 2011 9:50 pm

I asked about the possibility of the Symba coming to the UK 2 years ago and was told by Sym's then importers, Moore-Large "The Symba won't ever be imported into the EU, it won't meet present EU regulations." Either they were incredibly stupid or lying! It's the bike I most want to see on Tuesday when I visit! :D

Apparently, wierdly, Sym's info says it has a CV auto gearbox

CV, ie constant velocity, or they could be meaning a CVT, which is a continuously variable transmission. i.e. a twist and go job like most modern scooters have on them. but i thought the samba has a box on it like the cub, except a 4 speeder.

Aye CV = continuously variable. ('constant velocity' is a type of universal joint, not a type of gearbox)

Speaking of boxes.. That engine case looks distinctly non Cub shaped! :? Not like an Innova, Suzuki address, Modenas / Kawasaki or any other I've seen before either.. It'll be interesting to see one close up.

It has a chain and if you google it you can see a gear change on the left side.

It isn't CVT. It's a 4 speed with a semi auto clutch. I'm not sure whether the clutch is primary or secondary though. It's just that their spec sheets are wrong.

Boo, I'm at the NEC myself tomorrow I'll see what I can do as regards close up photos.

The story behind the Symba is that it is a direct development from the Honda Cub as Sym used to make the Honda under licence for the Taiwanese home market. When Honda pulled the licence, Sym continued to make and develop the cub into the Symba as it is today.

It's been sold for a long time and has been an established model in the USA for several years.

Primary. You can see the adjuster in line with the crankshaft.

I did think it was longer than that. I figured I'd seen one in 2007 when I was in the Florida Keys that first sparked my interest in them.

I remember a story of a guy riding one Up North America into Canada but that was later, around 2009/10.

EDIT: It was 2010. His blog is here: http://www.justgottascoot.com/BinhCheung.htm
