Innova wheel bearings

Hi everyone

Is it me?

Trying to take the wheel bearings out, usual routine, move spacer to one side etc etc.

I cannot get a purchase on the edge of the bearing the available lip is only just there. I have tried an assortment of drifts even an old screwdriver but they all just slip off.

I don’t have an internal bearing puller anymore, so like I said is it me or have others experienced this and is there a simples solution.

I just had the same on the Harley. I had a large ball bearing (Catapult ammo size) and a large cold chisel. I put the chisel halfway in the tube, turned it over and dropped the ball in, keep pressure on the chisel while turning it back over so they lock together. A few good whacks on the chisel and my first bearing came out.
I did dress the inside of the tube with a large round file as I scored it a bit , but TBH I didn't really need to.

I also considered getting a Rawl bolt to fit, but I would have had to go buy one and the chisel and ball worked. The other thing might get on the tube, is a bicycle handlebar stem arrangement, where the wedge pulls up against a wedge. But proably too big a diameter for most wheels.

had a nasty sticky wheel bearing on an FJ1200 that my bearing pullers wouldn't budge

Mullered 2 rawl bolts so turned to a great big drift and a lump.

It worked both bearings out.

A bit brutal i know
But i have in a few instances pulled out the bearing seals dropped a 10mm bolt in the hole and arc welded it to the bearing.
Nice solid object to hit and the heat aided the bearing removal
Also done it with a nut using a slide hammer on blind bearings in the gearbox.

Blind bearings can be extracted with grease if you have a drift that fits the centre of the bearing closely. I used to remove the bearing in the flywheel of Cortina's like that.

Pack grease into and beyond the bearing. Place a drift that's a reasonably tight fit into the centre of the bearing. Smack it with a big hammer and hydraulics will do the rest. Works well without damaging anything.

Yes i remember being told to use that method at work to remove bushes from a large hydraulic press in my earlier years by blanking off escape and regulator passages.
It did work eventually but we all came out looking like the blokes off Ghostbusters covered in Ectoplasm

The flywheel bush in the Mk 1 Cortina was phosphor bronze. No blowback!

Took my wheel to bike shop, cost £15 inc bearing.
