Well if they check the gear backlash then they will be removing the rotor and the anti-vibration plate underneath.
Either of those 2 items being loose would cause noise and vibration, but if 5e noise is originating from the drive side then it won’t be either of those items.

The noise is at its most intense with my ear at the front of the base of the cylinder head, just behind and above where the frame meets the front of the engine. Isn't this where the push-rods are? However I have gotten slightly impatient and have decided to look myself
, so have reached the point where I will be disconnecting the fuel tank lines from the fuel vapour filter. If I pull these lines off, will the fuel tank piss fuel everywhere or do they emerge above the level of the fuel in the tank? I don't want to start a large bonfire
. I can drain the fuel out into a separate container if necessary, or leave it to a professional in 2 weeks time... Although the mechanic in me doesn't want to fail at what should be a simple enough task, I don't want to create a combustible situation.

Surely it's still low mileage? I would take it back to your supplying dealer and let them sort it out..

It's done nearly 4000 miles now, only bought it in June. I think that taking it back to the dealer would be the most sensible thing, however I suspect it would be out of action for a long time while they get their act together to sort it out (provided they don't deny that there's anything wrong with it to begin with), and I'm enjoying riding it.

Having read both your posts, may I politely suggest taking it back to the dealers. They might know straight away what it is. It’s also under warranty, so it should be fixed by them.
If you want to disconnect the fuel tank though you’ll need to depressurise the fuel lines first. On my FI bikes that means disconnecting the electrics from the fuel pump and starting the engine until it stalls. Then unplug the fuel lines from the connection at the tank, they’ll need the clip releasing and DON’T TWIST the fuel pipe.

The vibration has been going on about 1800 miles. There's no indication of the performance of the bike being affected.

Bit of an update on the current state of affairs R.E. the vibration: I've taken the bike back to the dealers, they have stated that the noise is coming from the fuel pump, and that it is a noise that they do make. They've justified this by saying the bike that they have next to mine in the workshop, with a similar mileage (5600 miles), also makes the same noise!

I'm not so sure, I'd be interested to hear of anyone else with the UCE 500 engine that also makes this type of sound, after all, they said it's a normal sound for it to make, although past experience of 3 other fuel injected bikes would say otherwise...
