ANF 125 Noisy Fourth Gear.
Hello. I've bought a cheap ANF125 engine to tide me over whilst the original engine has a rebuild. The engine is from a 2006 carburettor model and it runs really well....until it goes into fourth gear. It whines really loudly, like an old Bedford Coach. I don't think its a bearing, because it's fine in the other three gears and it selects perfectly. So,the question is; Will the gearbox trudge on like this indefinitely, or is it about to destroy itself. I could always just use the lower three gears for local runs 'cos it seems pretty high geared and it's only a stop gap engine. Thanks.

C'mon Arry. The gearbox is obviously FUBAR. I reckon a tooth or two has broken off. Get with it man.

My 2006 Innova chain snapped just after the dealer replaced the cam chain to sell it on, it could be worth running it without the chaincase to see whats going on. Remove the chain and run it up at speed in fourth.

Thanks for that,DMW. I tried out what you said and the noise is still there without the chain. It's only in fourth gear, so I think Bogger might be correct in his analysis for once. It's only a stop gap engine, so I think I'll see if I can get 100 miles out of it and then change the oil and look for anything metallic coming out with the oil. If it's clear, I think it's worth carrying on with it. I have a 3.00x17 rear tyre, so the gearing is tall enough to just use the bottom three gears! Thanks again for your suggestion.

Arry. when you get your good engine back . Has Al got a spare 4th gear off that knackered Innova engine I sent to him a few years back. If so have that, then you'll have 2 good engines.
