BMW

Having been tinkering with my C50 for some months (slowed by the constant demands of work plus my 2 year old daughter) I have just acquired my dad's BMW R100 RT. Also a non runner so now I am balancing two projects with family life. I am tempted by the crazy idea of fitting the BMW with a side car, but I know this is not entirely an easy task, so I would welcome any hints and tips.

Regards,

Ian

Sounds a good idea. The RT would seem to be a good start, not that I know anything about outfits. I like the idea of one but don't have a suitable bike.

There appear to be quite a few sidecar clubs around, some local, some national. That's where I would start. :D

Good luck!

Many moons ago a mate had a BSA A10 with a sidecar, I used to ride it a lot. Not for wanting too. It was awful.
I'd get the BM back on the road solo and see what you think before piling money in to an outfit project that you may regret.
I know many people like outfits but for me a motorbike has two wheels, the extra wheel spoils performance, handling and breaking. They look nice but as soon as you ride off it all goes down hill. Just my opinion.

I could do with one at the moment.

Passed my test at 16 and 3 months, then broke my femur, pelvis, etc. 3 months in hospital and on crutches for a year. Announced to my parents that I had found a BSA outfit and would be buying it and using it to get to work until I was fit enough to take the chair off. Not approved. That's how I ended up with a Berkeley T60.

Funny how life goes around, at least I didn't get run over by a Vauxhall Cresta this time.

Agreed. Why ruin a perfectly good sidecar? :)

My two penn'orth is this.

If you've always wanted an outfit, this is a gift horse opportunity. Don't dismiss it because someone else has.

Have a go on one first, though. I ran a Ural outfit in the early 80s for a while and it was a totally alien experience starting out, as things that are logical and natural on a bike don't equate to the same when you add that extra wheel.

Speak to BikerPaul on here. Drop him a PM as he's not on here often.
