The year was 1986, a year after I'd spent 4 months on the road on an old MZ150 I'd picked up for free, "finding myself," before returning to North Notts.
I had a month to kill, a new girlfriend, and some mates doing a punk rock tour in Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.
What I didn't have was a lot of spare cash. Whist visiting Pollards Motorcycles in Dinnington, George Pollard turned up with a mid 70s Jawa 350 634 oilmaster in the back of his pickup.
It was taxed and MOT'd for 6 weeks. George started it up in a cloud of smoke on the back of the pickup. I gave him £40 and he dropped it round to my house.
I pumped up the tyres, oiled the chain, stuck some lawnmower grade 2 stroke oil in. We strapped several Army stores knapsacks to it, my old tent and 2 sleeping bags and set off for Somerset. Nothing notable happened to the Jawa. It was slow, smoked like a pit chimney and handled like a pissed pig on a skateboard. It was reasonably economical, and its Barum tyres didn't grip on any surface whatsoever.
I'm guessing we put 1200-1500 miles on it that month. It was a guess because the speedo, and hence the mileometer, decided each day whether it wanted to work or not. Fortunately it was so obnoxiously noisy that you could tell what speed you were going by it's blaaahhh-blaaahhhing exhaust note and clattering, rattling bearings.
The relationship didn't last (despite said girlfriend being even dirtier than the Jawa) and when we returned home, I took the Jawa down to the lawnmower centre in Worksop, and had 12 months MOT put on it, then sold it for £70 to a bloke who intended to commute 60 miles a day on it to his night shift job. I made sure his route didn't go past my bedroom, which overlooked the A60!
It's probably still going.
It wasn't this one but looked very similar, though mine was a tad dirtier.
