What's the motor in this one from originally, Dave?
From an Aixam micro car I believe.

Great progress Dave!

Yes indeed the motor is out of an Axiam.

I do get some stick on the dieselbike forum about the length of time things take me although there are other members who have been building for years without turning a wheel in anger.

So I’ll give you a ‘flavour’ of what’s involved in making the primary drive cover.

Starting out with a sheet of 3mm alloy, first you have to cut out a disk with just a grinder, then use a disk sander for the final ‘filing to the line’.

Image

Just cutting out that disk took half a cutting wheel too.

Then you have to chain drill out the centre hole.

Image

Then file all the 'points' and smooth the hole

Image

Then cut a strip of alloy for the outer

Image

Then bend this around whatever you can find that's about the right diameter and weld the join to make a ring.

Image

Then weld the 2 together, weld in the centre cup I made last week and then the filing and sanding starts - this will take around 2 hours and you will end up with....

The first section of the primary cover.

That's the end of todays exciting instalment.

Believe me I’ve looked at every pot, pan, mug, plate and frying pan from everywhere possible.

They are either, too thin, too thick (pressure cooker); just right but the wrong shape etc etc.

It’s a trial making this stuff to be sure but it is kind of satisfying in the end and it’s a lot better than some of the crap I’ve seen on other bikes.

I too was tempted to mention a similarity with camp cookware but was too polite to post it.

Nice work DD, keep it coming!

I can honestly say that I have never noticed an Aixam before ... Until I was following one in my van today.

They are tiny things, very narrow.

I'm assuming that it's a single or a twin. 😀

The engine is a Kubota Z482 (twin cylinder 480cc); it’s kind of ubiquitous in the canal boat/mini-digger/reefer fridge unit world.

Later cars moved to the Lombardini motor with the pulse deuse type injectors but those don’t have a great reputation.

Should be roadworthy by the time the snow and ice arrives this winter.

I think that the Lombardini was the same motor used in the diesel version of the Daihatsu HiJet van I had. The diesels were known for being a bit wheezy.

That's when I'm predicted to be fit to ride again after my surgery!

So the Kubota engine was lifted straight from the microcar into the royal enfield? What gearbox does it use?

Apologies if its a stupid question, but i know very little about car mechanics and even less about diesel bikes.
