He'd mentioned his grandson took the bike for a ride in a field or park. What I think actually occured, was that the GS had a shot on the bike, then fell off and didn't want to ride it again. This, I'm assuming is where the front indicator was broken.
Sounds like a more feasible explanation. Makes you wonder why sellers lie about stuff like this. It doesn't take Inspector Morse to work it out.

Looks tidy enough. 8-)

It cleaned up nicely but was looking a bit miserable when I first saw it. Enough to make me think twice about it actually.

Why the guy didn't give it a quick once over, I have no idea. Same with the feeble excuse regarding the indicator. I'd suspect it was related to the out of alignment front end, or, that might prompt further investigation.?

I still need to do a bit of final adjustment on the head bearings but I'll probably pull it apart and make sure there's plenty of grease in there as well.

Next thing is to see if I can find out what size of increased cylinder can be used on the 50cc engine without requiring machining etc.

Then there's some lighting modification where you swap a yellow and a black wire around to make the lights work from the battery, rather than the stator. Supposedly this improves the light output ...? That's according to the company that sells the bikes new.

Any ideas if this 70cc barrel & piston kit would go onto the Nanfang with the 50cc head?

If not, what should I be looking for?

Under £17 for a 70cc upgrade worth a punt it is 47 mm bore so the cases may need opening out.Who fitted the in line fuel filter ? they cause more running problems than any other thing.

It looks like a Honda CD50 with 1978 Suzuki K50 tank.

I like it

As far as I'm aware, it's fitted as standard unless the importer put them on?

I had an issue with one fitted to my Kawasaki Zephyr. Bloody connection came loose but assumed it was leaking carbs. Filter was added by previous owner and tucked up out of site under the tank. Removed and back to standard fitment.

Had the little Nanfang running today. Starts easily and idles perfectly but seems to be bogging down when revved.

Stripped and cleaned the carb, which was looking great. No change.

Pulls quite cleanly in first but very sluggish to build power there after.

Checked the valve setting and used 0.004 for inlet and outlet, which seems to have made a bit of difference and actually saw an indicated 40mph!

Still feels like it's not quite running as it should with general lack of power.

I've also changed the plug to an NGK which is giving a better colour reading. The original plug was somewhat sooty or rich.

I've dropped the circlip one notch on the carb needle but not had any time to test it yet.

Any other suggestions?

Could be it just needs run in, as it's only got 8 miles on the clock!

Set the tappets to 0.05 Inlet & 0.08 Exhaust.

Took the bike for a ride, appeared to be running better and actually saw a 50+ speedo reading going down hill, almost at the 55 mark!

How accurate that is is anyones guess but I'm seeing an easy 35 to 40ish on the flat.

Still felt a bit gutless going up hills but way better than yesterday.

On the return leg of the journey, I pulled over on the back road to let some farm vehicles past.

This was on a reasonably steep uphill section.

Couldn't get the bike to pull away, until, I revved the nuts off it and slipped the clutch!

Back at the house I tried adjusting the air screw etc and don't notice any increase in revs (idle screw works very well for that!) so it's set around 1.5 to 2 turns from stop.

Then decided to put the needle back to the centre (number 3 default) position and try again. Didn't really make any noticeable difference...

Thought I'd have a look at the baffles and they do look pretty restrictive (despite the downhill speeds!).

Went for a run up the nearest back road and power is certainly improved.

It's not perfect but perhaps I'm expecting way too much from a 49cc moped?

I've ordered a spare carb from China in the meantime to see if it is the carb.
