Well it turns out the replacement battery was defective and dropped down to 11.1v after one week sitting in the house.

They are sending out a replacement unit, so that's decent customer service.

The speedo drive gear must be slightly out of tolerance (not a close enough fit) as I can get the drive to work fine when it's first installed but then it loses drive. I can only imagine that the worm gear is moving away from the drive gear?

Is it just the philips screw that holds the speedo cable and worm gear in place or is something else meant to stop any lateral movement?

I'm no help, I've never detached the cable on mine and had never noticed the Philips screw, I've had the front wheels out on both bikes too.

I'm a fan of Motobatts, they seem to hold a charge for longer, I use one of them to power the pump in my camping kitchen. Must remember to check it out soon though.

I'm not sure why my original speedo gear got so badly chewed up, can only assume that there was no lubricant installed at the factory?

I took some measurements of the speedo gear and it showed 33mm but all of the replacements seem to be 32mm across the geared area.

I'm trying to recall if there should be a, bung, to keep the worm gear in place. For some reason, that's way back amongst the cobwebs of my brain but can't recall clearly whether or not it's a false memory

Not the same machine but a very similar setup, I'm fairly sure I'm missing the bung or whatever you call the ring that holds the worm gear in position.

It looks like what I'm missing is a speedo "pinion bushing"?

I blame you!
Went out on the Wave yesterday and the speedo stopped working. No screw to hold the cable in but there is a plastic clip on the outer to locate it which had broken. One very chewed up drive gear, new one ordered and will hopefully fix it, if its the worm then that's £110. At least the bits are still available from Honda.

If you happen to know of any old knackered brake hubs with a pinion bushing in it, you know where I am!

I have a spare pinion that's too narrow for the super cub, if you need a new one and it's the same measurements as yours, I'll send you mine.

I finally got some pics of the part that I'm missing - the bushing that holds the pinion in place.

I knew I was not making up a memory of a silver bushing.















The main question is, where to source the bushing?
