New battery

Post by Ricky Snelling » Sun Jan 28, 2024 2:32 pm

What are common earth faults to check for on c90zz, bike was stored for 1 year so replaced battery, started fine but no neutral light low beam, I’m not great on electrics!

Before you start to pull the bike apart... maybe check the bulbs aren't actually blown!
I would start with the neutral light.
Remove bulb, make sure filament not blown or test on battery (remember 6 volt or the bike battery). Test to see if power present at bulb holder?
Sometimes bulbs can blow if not used for a while.
Do you have a test light or volt meter?
Andy.

That’s a good idea, will check them, pressumed they are ok as working last time I used it, bit has been stood for a long time, if bulbs are ok will get a multimeter and start doing some checks, are some electrics powered direct from the generator and some from the battery?

THE EARLY 6v CUBS ARE NOT MY AREA OF EXPERTISE!! Later Cubs are my forte.
Another more knowledgeable member will probably confirm. There were some changes over the years between the 90 models & 50s & 70s.

I think your C90 ZZ is all DC battery, to power the lights, horn, brake light, neutral light etc. So should all work with ign switched on. Got a feeling there's a link to light switch to switch in extra coil for improved charging when lights are in use?
Just beware that a 6volt battery of 5 or 6 amp hour will quickly discharge if 'playing around' with the bulbs etc.
Not sure if you have trickle charger?

What exact year is your C90 ZZ,
Andy.

I think I will get a new battery charger as well, the one I have is older than the bike! They say the new battery comes charged but not sure how much juice it has in it.
I think your right about the bulbs, neutral bulb looks like it’s gone and the park light bulb has definitely blown, also found some wires off the ignition that have been twisted together so will get those connected up properly. Battery life is poor on the 6v so will try a trickle charger as well as will help keep it topped up!
Thanks for your help 👍

Hi Andy
It was bulbs, I guess starting with a dead battery may have caused them to blow, ordered a new flasher unit as well as that’s gone! Now I can focus on polishing 😀 thanks for your help 👍
