Re: engine packed up
Just because it conked, doesn't mean it needs an engine rebuild, especially at 15k miles.
It could be something really simple, like a poor electrical connection, which is most likely. Often with a cut out like that, it's often the connectors under the leg shields that get corroded and need a clean.
Why not let folks on here talk you through a few possible fixes before an engine take down which may be totally unnecessary and not even solve your problem? ?
First thing, do you have a spark?

Re: engine packed up
Just re=read the thread with a bit more time on my hands. So you have a spark, and have fuel.
Have you adjusted the valve clearances, because that would give you loss of compression also.

Re: engine packed up
it was running sweet, no i havent adjusted valves, but nothing is seized, we were at seaways and heading home up and down hills, 45-50 then 25 up them as you do, got on to a straight and were doing 40 ish and pop it just went, in fairness were best part 28 stone between us, so it maybe is a big ask for a little bike, whatever gave up just gave up, all the electrics seem fine everything works as it should, just the kick start is nearly as limp as a lettuce leaf and its got no or little compression coming through spark plug hole, i would love to think it was something simple, but i cannot see it at this stage. i am grateful for all the comments and advice though, thank you.

Re: engine packed up
Hi, had the same happen to me a few years back. Doing about 45 mph up slight incline engine power died. I ran it to the side of the road and it cut out. Same as yours... no compression limp kick start! Could select 1st gear run and bump engine but would die when on tickover. Anyway I managed to ride the Cub home. Had a look at valve clearances and discovered a chip out of the exhaust valve! Hence no compression! The exhaust valve gets hotter than the inlet one. So a new valve and ground in and she was lovely again. A 1988 with 15000 plus miles so about the same. So not a new engine. What seems catastrophic can sometimes be a simple fix. Anyway let us know how you got on? Cheers Andy.
