Personally I'd swerve around that one but then I'm a bit picky. Shoot me down Newt but

Says 4 speed electric start, it would have to have a bottom starter Lifan (probably 110) engine fitted and side cases changed to look like it does. Probably not then.

It's had some welding done very low down on the frame and splashed over with something or other, could hide a real bodge job.

The rack pictured is not for that model IMO. Think it's for a 6v bike, might be wrong been wrong before etc etc.
Yeah I missed that BB. They're the right casings, but who know's what's behind them? That or he doesn't know his own bike, which would imply he's not had it long. Definite swerve.

Thanks, this is the sort of info I really appreciate. I've seen a few of these bikes now offered for sale which have been fitted with Lifan engines and I didn't know what to make of it, but I gather they are best avoided.

Not necessarily Harry. Fitting a Lifan can make the bike a bit more 'roadable' depending on where you are riding. You get the fourth gear, and a bit more speed which if you are riding in areas where it's imperative to keep up with the traffic, is most useful.

From a collectors/enthusiasts/investors point of view, you would really want the original engine to come with it too.

My son (who is also bike mad and owns an Express as well as a "proper" bike) has just pointed out that it seems to not have the usual Honda Cub gearchange rocker pedal fitted, so I wonder if this is a tell-tale when looking for origininality?

Yes indeed. Another good spot. And a common modification after a Lifan is fitted. (They are pretty good engines TBH, just not original)

I sent the seller a message and said this...

"Your previous message

Hi, very quick query, is this definitely a four-speed? Do you know if the engine has been replaced at any point with a Lifan engine?"

And his reply...

"New message from: jabra_4988 (6)
Yes and matching frame and engine never been changed".

Confused now. :?:

Probably means the engine has been changed and DVLA not informed. Happens.

I have decided to give that one a miss but just from this evening's posts I have learned an enormous amount so it's all good at the end of the day.

I still have in mind April as the ideal time to be seriously in the market but until then I may post links to Cubs that catch my eye and would appreciate any and all feedback. I'd still ideally like to buy one from a trusted forum member though and I'll post in the "Wanted" section nearer the time, although if anyone is selling a roadworthy and MOT'd Cub in the meantime I'd appreciate a heads-up.
