Hello! 1974 C90 joins the forum

Post by Mike D » Thu Sep 17, 2020 1:32 pm

Hello All,
I've been a member for a while, as I've had a Cub on my radar stemming back to having an old C70 as a field bike 25 years ago! Fast forward to earlier this week, and I found the spit of that old bike for sale, albeit a 90 and in much better condition. Yesterday I drove over to collect it. It rode the 40 miles home happily, with me grinning all the way :D It's world apart from my other bikes ( Harley 48 and MZ Baghira 660) but just as much fun in its own way. Plans are a liberal dowsing in XCP rust blocker to try and preserve the oily rag patina :)

Re: Hello! 1974 C90 joins the forum - broken already!

Post by Mike D » Fri Sep 25, 2020 8:57 am

I must've covered about 70 miles on the old girl, and now she has quit on me! Was riding fine until I stopped to have a break, popped it into neutral and the engine died - it's got fuel, but doesn't seem to have spark - was running fine with lights on. Any ideas chaps? No amount of kicking or a bump start will make it run. I'll meter everything out over the weekend.

Cheers,
Mike

There is an emergency start position to get it going with a flat battery
Ignition on.....lights on......put the hi/lo switch in the position between hi and lo
It should spark using power from the generator.
Next job is put a multimeter across the battery....... first do it with the engine off
Then get it started and test battery again........rev it and it should show a increase in voltage if the charging circuit is working
If you've no idea of the age of the battery,a new one won't harm it

Battery metered out ok, turned out there was a 10a fuse as the main fuse and it had blown. Replaced and its up and running again but i seem to have lost the front lights.. rear light works so i assume main switch is ok but ive got no sidelight or dipped/main now. Bulbs look and meter out ok.

Voltage raises to 7.6v when revved, i didnt rev it too hard mind as it was cold

Cheers for the suggestions so far folks :D

All sorted with the lights now, once the new instrument bulbs turn up i'll box it back up and see how it performs. Any recommendations of a bridge rectifier to replace the selenium one? 8-)
