What's the purpose of the bungee going from the top of the hatch to the seat?

That's purely there to assist with loading the bike single handed. Stops it falling on your head whilst strapping down and to the vertical post. Just taut enough to hold the bike but not pull it in as the bar end could get too close to the window. Some people put a holed tennis ball or similar to stop the grip tapping the screen.
