Yes 98000 is a more accurate number.
I've just done the arithmetic and my 2 are 97877 and 97854 apart.
So i wouldn't be surprised if yours is the original frame and engine.
It appears that when they changed over to the ZZ and Z2 models that was when they brought the engine and frame numbers closer together.
Also adding a VIN plate on the frame.
I've mentioned before about working in a Motorbike shop in the late 80s early 90s and the very few issues we had with the 6 Volt 90s, We had quite a few good S/H engines under the bench and that's where they stayed never needed.
So i certainly wouldn't jump to a replacement engine scenario.
