Hi to fellow C90 owners - help needed dating my C90

Post by c90Gus » Sat Dec 29, 2018 3:06 pm

Hi All, Just bought a C90 from a guy who in turn had bought it from a family friend - the original owner. The problem came when he sent off the V5 (the bike had a 1976 registration), and he noticed when it came back that the frame VIN was a few hundred out. It would seem that the original onwer had swapped the frame for a contemporary one at some point but omitted to inform the DVLA. The new owner notified DVLA who confiscated the V5 and told him to re-register the bike. He couldn't be bothered with the red tape and hassle so he sold it to muggins here! The original frame No was C90-B117389. I've applied for a dating letter from the VJMC but they believe the bike to be from 1967. Can anyone give me an idea as to when it was made from the VIN?

Ok here's my ten bobs worth

Iv'e got a C90 March 1974 with a frame Number C90-B-09087*
Also a C90 March 1975 with a Frame Number C90-B-10232*
Asterisk covering last number in fear of the C90 ringing fraternity ever appearing :o

So doing a bit of arithmetic they sold 11450 ish that registration year 74 to 75
So assuming sales are constant
by the March 1976 they should be around C90-B-113770
And then by March 1977 should be around C90-B-125230
So it puts that VIN you posted around mid 1976
There is always the possibility the bike has its original frame and DVLA sent out the wrong number on that V5.
Iv'e had a few cock up's from them one involving a letter missing on the V5 of a frame number on a Suzuki DR125 took months even after forwarding a correct copy of the V5 i took before it being sent in for change of owner.
Best of luck

I wonder if the frame number and engine number has been mixed up as they would be a few hundred apart .

Around 100,000 it appears.
But i wouldn't put it past the incompetence of the DVLA !

March 1974
Frame number C90-B-09087*
Engine number C90E,18874* (No Hyphen on this V5 just a comma)

March 1975
Frame number C90-B-10232*
Engine number C90-E-20017* (Hyphens on this V5)

I know it's been mentioned before about a database of members bike's being created Reg Year ,VIN numbers, Engine numbers, Colours Etc did anything come of it ?.
I appreciate theres always the risk of misuse but the hiding of the last one or two digits would make it pretty secure after all their not Aston Martin's.

Thanks guys - really useful. The dating chap at VJMC consulted UK experts who verified my bike as a '76. He then spoke to Japan who sent him pictures of a '67 bike and an unusual variant of a '76 bike which looks quite different to the C90 we know and love. On this basis they are withdrawing their dating! My bike was registered as new in '76, as the two frame numbers are so close I can only assume an error in the original registering process or something like the frame being replaced very soon after purchase.

DVLA enter the numbers that are supplied by the dealer selling the bike from new . The engine should be within a hundred or so if it is further away it could be a re engine or again a mistake by the supplier.

Not wanting to sound argumentative but possibly a mistake or a re-engine on the 1975 model as it was secondhand.
But my 1974 model was purchased New from a Honda dealer and it still has its original engine and what's left of its original frame both matching the original V5 (Old 2 piece white A4 paper with the blue boxes).

Any other C90E owners want to throw in some numbers ?.

Frame c90-B-1090xx
Engine c90-e-2068xx
