new member, new venture.
hi
i stumbled on this site while looking for a trusty C90.
had bikes for the last 30+ years and currently have a 2006 zx636 kawasaki.
love my trackdays and off road stuff however i NEED a C90 or possibly 2 or 3 more (see wanted section), we have a strange charity venture coming up and feel that the honda fits the bill perfectly.
are these things ok for 3000 - 3500 miles without a service?
cheers. T

Re: new member, new venture.
I did 3500 miles in 13 days for my own charity trip. I didn't even change the oil (in fairness most of burnt or leaked out, so when I topped it up I was changing it incrementally ).
I was lucky. The gearbox recently broke, so obviously the thrashing did it no good.
Maltreat them, and they will break eventually. Poorly adjusted exhaust valves burn out (the exhaust valves on Cubs do run particularly hot). The service interval for oil changes is supposed to be about 500 miles or so.
Some run forever on neglect, others die quickly. I think there's an element of luck involved somewhere!

No service = no chance
Re: new member, new venture.
As they hold less than a litre of oil, with NO oil filter as such, riding them ( PROBABLY FLAT OUT ) for 3,500 miles will probably kill the engine.
As everyone who owns one has been told by onlookers " Bloody indestructible them"......some owners know differently !

Re: new member, new venture.
thanks for that, it looks like a litre will be needed in the home made topbox then
i didnt think they would go that distance without being cruel, i do mine every 2k regardless but that holds 4 litres.
just another question.... what sort of speed is comfortable, 45mph? i need to know how long this will take.

If you look at your question literally, 3000-3500 miles with no service, you've gotta be looking shaft drive big posh bike haven't you?
And then you'll be lucky if the rear tyre lasts that long!
In less than two months, from Dec 13th 2009 to Feb 8th 2010 I did over 5000 miles on a standard 90. Engine was bought off Evilbay, and came encrusted with grime, history unknown, but it isn't a late roller bearing head model.
The bikes will be great for what you want to do, but you will need to service them. Good news is it's dead easy to do yourself.
Let's be honest, 3000-3500 miles on big posh shaft drive bike = unremarkable, not going to create much interest/raise much money.
3000-3500 miles on a Moped/Crunchy/Silly little bike (That's 200 Hail Mary's self flaggellation and sack cloth and ashes for a fortnight.... ) IS remarkable and people listen/take notice.
My son was in a lecture room waiting for the tutor when he mentioned his dad had gone to the Elefantentreffen. No one remarked or took much notice, just 'Oh'. When he told them I'd gone on a 90....
So, they're fantastic little bikes, get one, get to know it, then raise lots of money with it! Good luck, and hang around here let us know how you are doing!
Yes, 45mph is about right.

Re: new member, new venture.
thanks.. sure will hang around and im sure the others will join soon.
plenty of pics will be taken from the early prep stages to the end.
i have a vinyl cutter so some c90club.co stickers will be slapped on
i did have a C70 back in 1995 time, i seem to remember it did 50 flat out but vibration was plenty at that speed.
it was an old beast that i sold to a mate and he travelled to work and back in all weathers for the next 3 years. i did regret selling it

Re: new member, new venture.
things have moved on a bit these last few months.
we decided to drop the C90 idea (very sorry) in favour of old 250's.
the bike has to be older than 1990, aircooled, less than 4 cylinders, less than 500cc and £500 or less. these were the 'guidelines' but we all got 250's as they seemed the right choice.
i have a 1989 honda cd250u, pete has a 1979 kawasaki z250, lee has a 1981 honda cb250rs and jase has a suzuki gsx250 but that might be changed
mine is nearly trip ready, petes needs fork seals and a rectifier, lee's is nearly trip ready but jasons is in boxes
the date we set off is 15th may, starting at portsmouth (may be changed to kings lynn) and running anticlock round the uk.
we need to be doing 330 miles a day to complete the trip in 11ish days.
we have a charity, its a home for the disabled near leicester. we visited this place last april on our sports bikes. these poor people have never been close to a bike before let alone revved the nuts off them they absolutely loved it.
will keep you posted on the progress up to the trip and will post a blog when (if ) we return.
tony.
