its not that im after camping advice because i dont need it. i spent 4 years in army cadets as a teenager and i spent many a cold or hot night under canvas. maybe you should try and erect a tent in the pitch black with not so much as a cigerette for a torch.
after reading about the subject in the guides i thought it was about time that someone added another topic in the guide about camping
its not so much about camping but as you know putting a load of camping gear on a bike is not as easy as throwing it in the back of a car. put it on a bike wrong and you could end up having an accident.
this is where you need to distribute the weight in an even manner. i believe that in the ideal world that heavy gear would be better of in a lower position in the middle of the bike. maybe you use a plastic toolbox if you have a centre rack and hold it in place with a ratchet strap.
i remember that when i had a cub engine on the back of a cub that the handling was totally different and that the front wheel would lock very easily when braking if you brake a bit hard.
so maybe its about time that a serious cub owner who does a lot of tours wrote a topic on loading up your cub.

If you came to any of the meets you would see lots of campers on bikes and there are lots of links to smallest tents and other gear .And read the threads in the riding stories some epic journeys there ..

I did start a guide on this a long time ago (in the guides section), though due to lazyness never finished it.

Perhaps I should...

In front basket: tools, spares, spare oil, inner tube & 12v tyre pump.
Between knees: Extra fuel tank and chain & lock.
On back seat: Tent wrapped in bin liner and thick plastic bag.
On rear rack: Sleeping bag wrapped in bin liner and thick plastic bag.
In bicycle panniers joined together with 10mm blue polypropylene rope and slung over seat: Clothes, cooker & fuel, pots & pans, food & water, torches, camera, bits & bobs etc.

Like you said keep the heavy stuff low down and as near to the centre as possible. Balance the weight so neither front or rear of bike is too heavy or too light. Aim to keep centre of gravity low and in the middle.
