The Chicken Chasers Day Out

The Chicken Chasers Day Out ……By my other half Sheila.

Every Thursday except for last year
When Covid infected the whole world with fear,
The Chicken Chasers whatever the weather
Jump on their bikes and ride out together,
To enjoy gentle cruising down Lancashire lanes
And through Yorkshire and Cumbria’s hillier terrains.

Often wrapped up in so many layers of clothes
There isn’t a single inch of flesh left exposed
And many now resemble the Michelin Man.
Still! They’re determined to ride for as long as they can,
Through sunshine; frost, snow, hail or rain
Bravely ignoring all aches and twinges of pain.

And if you happen to see them it soon becomes clear
The Hells Angels really have naff all to fear,
As they all ride at a pace quite sedate
Cos’ they know riding at speed is just tempting fate.
And most realize they’ve now reached the stage
Where they have no choice but to consider their age.

At around midday it’s Wetherspoons for lunch,
Which suits such a careful and thrifty bunch,
Especially those money conscious Yorkshire lads
Who have no patience or time for culinary fads
And will always go for the very best deal
That offers a good wholesome, cheap, tasty meal.

At other times they may choose to opt for a caff
Somewhere to enjoy a good joke and a laugh,
Though often other customers will chose not to stay
When John W takes out his Harmonica and starts to play,
And some of the group break out into song
And those that can’t sing just clap along.

Then, with their thirst and hunger well satisfied
It’s time to head towards home to complete the ride,
Checking John Stanley’s got his passport to hand
That will allow him back into God’s Own Land
Before dusk falls and they lose all the light,
And the Yorkshire Border shuts down for the night.

What I say is- Keep riding Lads for you’re never too old
Remember fortune always favours the bold
And even if the worst it does come to pass,
And you fall off your bike and land on your ass
Take no heed of those who may laugh or scoff,
Just pick yourself up and dust yourself off.
