First ride out (West Cork)

Post by muzy » Mon Jul 25, 2016 2:04 pm

So after many months of thinking I bought my first cub in May of this year. She needed a bit of work, so over the the 2 months I have replaced and fixed pretty much everything. The engine and frame were sound, so it wasn't anything too taxing. Last Wednesday (20th July) I finally finished all the work needed and both me and the bike were ready for our first spin. I say me as well because this is the first bike I have ever owned. Below are some images of the route. All in all it was a great time. Things I noted from the trip.

My top speed was about 47mph. With that in mind I cruised for the most of it at 42/44mph. (is this a good cruising speed for these bikes? I don't want to over work the engine. I am 6ft3 and 14 stone for reference.

The trip was about 58 miles total. My estimate is that I burned a tank. I was in the red by about mile 40 so I decided to fill up. I still might have had a good bit to go on the red. Not too sure yet.

On a trip like this, should you pull in maybe every 20/30 miles to let teh engine cool or anything like that or should you just drive all day?

Any info on the above would be great.

Many thanks

I asked a similar question when I first got mine also. The general feeling appears to be just keep riding!. A lot say either 50mph or WOT (wide open throttle) as a guide.

I cruise at around 45mph on mine and get it up to 50 when the wind allows.

Ya that sounds about right, I could have been hitting 50 if the Atlantic breeze wasn't head on.

Great, I think a rule of thumb like that is good to adopt.
