South-West Ireland on small Hondas....
Last weekend, three of us decided to travel the Beara peninsula, south-west Ireland on our three little Hondas - an '82 Dax, a '69 CT90 and my own '99 Cub 90.
The trip took about 4 1/2 hours with plenty of stops for photos etc on both paved road and tracks coming to just short of 100 miles in total. The trip began at
Glengarriff, Co. Cork where we parked our "accommodation" (VW campers x 2). Here's the VW's loaded up and ready for road:
Just about to set off from Glengarriff:
From here, we took the coastal route on the southern part of the peninsula heading to Dursey where Ireland's only cable car is situated.
Rush hour traffic, rural Ireland style:
Nearing the furthest point of our trip, Dursey/Ballaghboy..........
At the Ballaghboy - Dursey cable car station (check out the signposts for Moscow and New York !):
The cable car can take up to 6 people and takes approximately 10 minutes to cross from station to station. The island is accessed by this method rather than by boat
due to the treacherous waters in the Dursey Sound. Previously, it was a common sight to see the islanders transporting cattle across in the cable car:
For anyone with a historical interest in World War 2, on 23rd july 1943, a German Junkers Ju-88 crashed near this spot. It was flying a weather reconnaissance
mission out of Nantes, France when it crashed due to fog, killing all 4 of it's crew:
After reaching our furthest point, it was time to head north-east and up onto the upper part of the peninsula to take us back to our original start point of
Glengarriff via Allihies, Eyeries, Ardgroom and the scenic Healy Pass:
At Kilmacalogue Pier, Co. Kerry:
Ireland's famous national tipple:
And finally, on our way back to our start point heading up the Healy Pass:
Overall, a cracking day with great company, great scenery and great little bikes !

We were there in Late May...Ring of Kerry ride...what a great holiday and a fabulous place to ride a bike....loads of roads with NO traffic at all for miles
Also nice to have people pull over to let you past if they're slower than you...we soon learnt to do the same and it made things much more chilled

The Ring of Kerry is pretty close by to the Beara peninsula with similar roads and scenery - a really nice spot too !spikeyboy60 wrote:We were there in Late May...Ring of Kerry ride...what a great holiday and a fabulous place to ride a bike....loads of roads with NO traffic at all for miles
