I traveled regularly to Hungary and stand corrected on Austria, you need a vignette, car was €7.50 for a 10 day but did not see any bikes with one.

Lots of very interesting info, particularly from newt ( and I'm referring to the contacts he previously made to motorcycle rental companies abroad).
But there's been no mention of Ireland (Eire).
If the Four Old Fogeys are going to do their Irish trip this year, libby aka Captain Sensible ( let the gears do the work) is not going to be very happy if we all wave him goodbye cos he's stuck on the ferry with his L plates.
So, does the info that's been gathered i.e,
“In order to ride a 125cc you would need the equivalent of an A1 permit, or a license that dates before 1982 or have insured a 125cc in the last 5 years in your name.”, apply to IRELAND as well. If so, libby will not be in the cack as he passed his driving test before 1982 and has also insured his 125 cc Innova within the last 5 years.
Plus, if still all good, would he need to stick L plates on his hi viz, front and back as learners in Ireland need to do?

I was in the ROI late last year, and Su was unable to ride on a CBT. Should be ok in NI but I'm surmising.....

Newt, how did that decision come about? Was it insurance that picked it up or what, to prevent Su?

You need a full licence to ride in the ROI.

I've just had an email from the RSA in Ireland:

" Dear Duncan
Thank you for your query.
If your friend is still on a learner / provisional licence he cannot drive his motorcycle in Ireland. Learner / provisional licence are only valid in the country of issue.
A full licence holder can drive as there is mutual recognition of full licences issued in the EU.
I hope this information is of assistance to you.

Correct, the Republic, but as libby said when he phoned this morning, did you state in the email you sent that I've had a full car licence for the last 40 years!!!
This might make a difference as, of course, the RSA reply of NOT being able to ride could be based on them thinking that libby has JUST a provisional bike licence alone.
Anyway Ive sent another email asking for clarification.

I'll be very very, surprised. Your full car licence doesn't negate the fact that if you are CBT you are on a provisional. For that category of vehicle.
