Post by Jules65 » Sun Feb 24, 2013 9:08 pm

Due to the DVLA being some what awkward I need to get a replacement frame for my 1972 C50.

It all started with this thread

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=7883&start=20

and then after the MOT certificate was handed to me and the DVLA realised the number the MOT tester had completed on his records did not match their existing one it opened a world of crap.

My frame has no number at all where one should be and has never had one. It looks like this

On the opposite side there is a number stamped in and it is this

The MOT tester used the numbers on the opposite side of the frame to where the frame number should have been as the frame number.

In hind sight I know I should have stamped the number in where it should have been, but I did not as I saw no issue as the MOT tester stated that it was a reframe and they came blank. The DVLA requested photos of the frame and I sent them what you can see. They in turn contacted the president of the Honda Owners Club (the ones who could not help me before and directed me towards the Vintage Janpanese Motorcycle Owners Club) and sent him the photos. He has stated to the DVLA that Honda never produced a frame without a frame number that was exported to the UK and has stated that my frame is not genuine. As such DVLA have stated I can not re MOT my bike as it is/registered and it looks like they want to put it on a 'Q' plate.

I spoke with the MOT tester about it and he showed me a brand new Honda Blackbird frame he was replacing with a new one Honda had supplied for a customer who had had an accident after owning the bike a month. That frame had no number stamped on it and the MOT tester created a number with his own initials/name incorporated in in. The insurance company assessor then appeared and passed the new frame ensuring the old one was chopped into pieces infront of him to ensure it was not re-used.

So I now have a bike I can not MOT, with the DVLA wanting to Q plate it and a bike tester who has worked in the industry for 40 years and a president of a motorcycle club who disagree re Honda supplying blank frames.

I am a tad miffed to say the least. All I feel I can do is reframe it but I want it to still be tax exempt as it originally was.

Would Dvla send you a history of the bike based on the reg number ,you have to pay for it £5 ? but it may show a reframe . Also get a few letters from dealers and bike repairers stating wether or not the genuine honda replacement frames have a number or not ,

Can't you just get the shop or a friend to stamp the numbers out log book on the frame

Due to the fact that the DVLA now know my frame has no number where it should be (I sent them photos if you recall) they know that my original frame no longer exists and should it (the number that is) suddenly appear would get suspicious. In addition due to the numbers on the other side of the frame being where they are, should I stamp another frame number where it should be, the afore mentioned number would give away what had been done (again the DVLA have a photo of this number).
This is why I need to prove the age and originality of my frame and try to prove where and when it was reframed otherwise I will have to reframe it.

Wow that is a long time to wait , Honda did stamp the date the frame was made on frames once in the form year month and day 2 digits each , so is there anything before the first 6 ?

And Honda did not stamp replacement frames , CSMNL have some for sale for the 12-volt bikes , your engine will fit in one .

Where did you get the frame from ?
