I don't think there are enough tassles on that model for you Newt .
Apparently a decent enough bike with ok performance and fuel economy etc.

There better than the dopyvill but not much
Very old engine (it a vt500) that no where near a cleaver as the C90
don't pull away in second or the gearbox will fail and it is a Vertical split twin
4 spark plugs the ones down the holes are not easy to get to !!

Well I went to look, and I sorta knew it wasn't for me. 7k miles but 12 years old, and it had been kept under a carport and there was rust on the bars, and here and there, and the black plastics looked a bit tired, and I thought, 'I've got bikes like that'.
This was it, anyway.

those bm singles might not be a "true" bmw but they are very very good, i had an early funduro, the best single cyl large bore engine iv had i recon, the later ones seem to be good also,,,

Re: Honda Transalp 650 2001/ GS 650 NOW??
newt those BMW GS singles are shite (personal opinion)... my mate has a red un and my crappy old Suzi gs500 can run circles round it, and engines sound like a bag of spanners.. thought it was maybe just hers, but I've heard a couple running now n they all sound like that, how a 18yo heap, can sound smoother and out accelerate a 6yr old bike with under 12k and always serviced at a dealer like clockwork is beyond me, hell a suzi gs aint exactly a rocket ship. and spares... jeez you would need a second mortgage for the bits.. there no cheap!
if you want a super motard, try a KTM... least there orange or look for a teniere, a DR suzi, or a bigger honda trailie like a XR500... anything but ein beemer! or go the british rout with a CCM 644 or a triumph Tiger
alas it looks like our newts turning to der swartz side

Re: Honda Transalp 650 2001/ GS 650 NOW??
The F650 is a bit of a slug
two things to note
1 The water pump if it fails is a pig either replace the steel oil lines with flexible cutting the old ones ! or take the engine out
2 BMW parts prices are reassuringly expensive and made in China !! Dealer work is stupid expensive £100 an hour in London area is the norm !!
The engine a Rotax MX design last a bout 70k miles then the cam chain tension bore is too worn and a new Barrel is requires as he tensioner is a part of it !!
Te best Adventure tour bike is currently the Yamaha XT660 in it various guises but none are as good on road as a road bike !
