It's one of my creations Dave, belongs to a mate of mine. Drives really well now and doesn't try to tip over like stock ones

Commer, infamous for their "knocker" engines, a boxer engine turned inside out, with no cylinder heads. Instead two opposed pistons, connected to huge rockers, sharing a centra crankshaft, share the same cylinder.

I used to drive a preserved trolleybus, 1928 vintage, that had been fitted with a Commer T.S.3 diesel, strange beast of an engine. The noise the engine made was incredible, it revved really freely for a 1950's diesel lump, similar design to the diagram above, but 3 cylinders (and 6 pistons!!!) give it some stick and it would shower sparks from the exhaust, was told it was self decoking, and the sparks were the result of it doing that. But, for all the noise and revs, it would only do 26m.p.h. flat out, but even at that speed you'd swear Concorde was trying to land on top of it! :D

TS3 was a very advanced design, and very efficient. The power of a 6-7L from 3L.

I know, it was impressive the way it went pulling 10 tons of fully loaded bus, and once in top gear, very rarely had to change down again until you stopped, even round the hilly terrain of Hastings!

Ahh, the sound of a 2 stroke Commer diesel brings back my childhood! My uncle drove them for a local building company for many years. As a treat he would pick me up and I would spend the day being transported around Essex, I always heard him coming from far away due to the scream of the engine. Conversation was difficult, sitting over the engine and with him being a soft spoken Lancastrian! Happy days!
