Finally bought a bike!

Post by Commuter1 » Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:53 am

As most of you know I have been toying with lots of bikes around 400-500cc, I bought a 1991 Suzuki GS500E Slingshot about 6 weeks ago, been that busy working on it that I haven't had time to post on here, hoping to of obtained my full bike licence by September and can get it on the road. I like the bike, very basic, looks a bit sporty, sounds great with full Scorpion exhaust, I only plan on keeping it a year then buying a more sensible commuter, I wanted a big bike to build some experience whilst I still have the option of taking car to work when the weather gets bad (snow, ice), I then want to buy a small upto 250cc commuter bike which will be great on fuel, very basic to maintain and handle snow and icy roads, c90 type bikes seem good in bad weather as the low centre of gravity, I have also considered Suzuki RV125 VanVan due to the chunky tyres but they are expensive to buy for a 125.

Nice one! The C90's are great in the snow, easy to control, but the main thing is at 85kg they are far less likely to harm you if you take a spill. In fact I've lost it at low speed. slid on my boots and heaved the bike back up under me!

Thanks newtsalad, I would love to keep the gs500 but the whole idea of me getting my full licence is so we can ditch one of our 2 cars, costing a lot to run, I fear the gs500 will be a bit too top heavy for ice and snow, love the idea of a c90 however going to try and get the new c90 (wave 110i) local dealer had a pre registered one for £1599 otr was so close to buying and pulled out last min as the lure of a big bike was too much, I have access to our car until May next year as wife on maternity leave as just had baby that's my excuse anyway! , so if the weather turns I go in the car!, newtsalad that sounds fun mate, video on YouTube with a man going by 4x4 in snow on a c90 its class!

gs500 may have a killerbike in slippery conditions, i think. i been fall on my xj600 pre-diversion yamaha ( about 210 kg curbwaight), and on very low speed, but absolutely not want experience anything similar again - my leg has bit injured, and feel not good for about month... even not want to think myself on real motorcycle in snowy \ icy conditions....

cubbike is fully different beast in that aspect.
it was, on paper, only half lighter than normal motorcycle ( 100 kg vs 200 kg), but in real life on feelings, cubbike weights like nothing - you can easy manage it in situations, when trying to manage big bike make you sweet or even fall...
yes, 500 - 600 - 900 - 1200cc have a good dynamic, speed - all that things, who can baught a grave for you, but it also a uneconomycal ( best who i get from my 600cc is 3.98 litres / 100 km - mostly on highway cruising at 70 km/h with slow accelerations and so). in the same time my cubbike eats less than 2 litres to 100 km. and it have a much less expenses for repair, if i must swap, say, clutch, or spark plugs ( one or four at time!), or chain and sprockets, or even tyres...;)
