Proper measurement versus Metric.

Post by Bill/Rubery » Tue Aug 26, 2014 12:00 pm

Hello Speeders, I don't know about you but I still measure and buy stuff in Imperial! As I service my Vox myself I had to buy a new feeler gauge set as the Vox inlet valve gap is 0.3mm. Can you tell me if 0.30mm (on the new purchase) is the same as 0.3mm??? My old feeler gauges were alright for my late Innova as both valves were 0.5mm. What a pity they don't make imperial size gauges anymore...I will have to look after the one's I own.

0.3mm is 0.0118" (11 to 12 thou.) in old money.

That seems rather a lot, when the Cub is only a .05mm or .002" Two thou. gap.

Are you sure it's not .03mm ?

Further, a quick bit of research tells me that the early carb version Innova's valve clearance was .05mm, same as a Cub, and the later fuel injected ones were 0.1mm clearance.

So if you were setting 0.5mm, it must have rattled like a stick in a bucket..... :? :? :?

Can anyone jump into this fray and sort this out definitively? :ugeek:

Hello Newtsalad, I quoted that metric measurement from a reply I received from Three Cross Motorcycles who import Peugeot motorcycles. My Innova ran just like my Vox does....like a sewing machine. Maybe that might be due to my commented-on typical cruising speed??....

Just re-read one of your messages, Newtsalad,....my Innova was a carb model not the later electronic thing.

Ok Bill, just so long as you are aware that 0.5mm is ten times bigger than .05mm. If you are certain that the inlet valve clearance on the Vox is indeed 0.5mm then that's fine.

You'll soon know if it runs like a bag o nails!

Actually Newt I wont be aware of valve clatter as not only do I have a close fitting helmet but I rode a Innova and ride the Vox as both have the tell-tail gear selection lights on the speedo....my hearing started going down hill in 1960 and its still going down now. Dear dear me!....a basket case.
