Hello folks!

Just thought I'd say hello as I'm a new C90 owner (a scooter-based stag weekend was the reason for purchase) and I thought I'd better get some tips on making her run properly before the 800 mile round trip!

First up, change the oil.

and then.....

check the plug, post a picture of the plug up so people can see it.
We can then tell you if your carb needs adjusting.

Start the bike, video it.
People can then tell you if it is running properly.

visually check the cables. If they are badly frayed or partly broken, replace.

Check the wear and pressure of the tyres.

Give it a good once over looking for rust. Any rust - post pictures so people can tell you if it is in an important place.
Make sure that the little rubber bit is still on the side stand.
Check the lights.

That should just about cover it.
A good 20 minutes should see that everything is checked

Cheers for all the help!

The spark plug was sooty black when I pulled it out the other day and gave it a clean. I rode for about 40 miles and it was all sooty black again. I'll post a pic when I get in this evening. Which forum it be best to post under? Engine, gearbox and running gear?

The little rubber tab is still attached to the side-stand. Why is that important?

I'll try get a short video of her running, too.

Sooty black sounds rich what year is your bike? the rubber tab flicks the side stand up if you forget and will save you a lot of pain. :o :oops: :lol: You could try to lower the needle ..unscrew the top of the carb pull the piston and needle out you will see that the needle has a clip on it move this clip towards the cable thus lowering the needle,give it a run and check the plug.

I read somewhere that the default setting for the mixture screw on the carb is 1 and 1/4 turns out from fully turned in, does this sound right? I checked the screw today and it was only about 1/2 a turn from fully screwed in - which I guess could explain it running rich?

It's a 1984 C90 ("e" is the model, I believe - square headlight version).

I would put the picture of the sparkplug up on Engine, gearbox and running gear.

with the mixture screw:
Start the engine, raise the idle a bit with the idle screw.
Screw the idle mixture screw out until the bike starts to faulter.
Then screw the idle screw in until the bike starts to faulter, counting the number of turns.
The correct position is half way between.
Then lower the idle speed again.

I am not overly familiar with the 1984 c90e, but I beleive it should be electronic ignition, which means nothing to adjust there.

Check the other cables/tyres and make sure that the brakes work.
The brakes/cables/tyres are probably the most important parts of the bike in keeping you upright and free from accidents.

Check that the choke is returning fully opening and not sticking on slightly. Easy enough to see with the rubber elbow levered off the carb inlet.
