Howdy from the states!

Post by Maddragoon » Thu Mar 09, 2023 4:12 pm

New member and new owner of a 1968 CM90.

I have been a viewer of Ed March's channel C90adventures on YouTube for a while and when saw a c90 pop up in my local classifieds I had to jump on it. After a couple miles on it I have a whole new respect for the miles Ed put in his bike 😅

Great stuff!

What part of the USA?

How does the 90 compare to the Taotao 50?

8-)

For being 50 years older, the cm90 is surprisingly peppy and has way more power than the little 50cc TaoTao. Even taking into account the difference in transmissions, the 3 speed cvt Honda and single gear cvt TaoTao. Top speeds (in "freedom units" as I keep hearing them called) are 55 miles per hour comfortably on the cm90 and 45 mph on the TaoTao, downhill with a strong tailwind.

I threw in a pic of the two side by side, please excuse the poor TaoTaos state, she's in the middle of cosmetic surgery. The cheap plastic body just couldn't handle the abuse my big body threw at it. For whatever reason the seat was only supported via a plastic outer shell and thinner plastic storage compartment... No metal at all.

From what I can tell, the Honda has been in my area, central Illinois, since the mid 70's at least, according to the registration. It's been well cared for, given it's lack of rust and pretty good condition of the various plastic bits.

That looks like a CM91...no indicators and an OHC 6v motor...I stand to be corrected of course ;)

To be completely honest I'm not sure on any of that yet. I asked the previous owner about both the 90/91 thing and the 6v/12v thing and he said it's a 91 even though he'd advertised it as a 90. As to the 6v part he just said, well, it's got a 12v battery 🤷🏻... (Now I'm afraid it's gonna melt down in my garage 😅)

A quick check of the headlight confirms that it's definitely not been converted to 12v and the current battery is wrong. Guess I better stop riding it until I get a proper 6v. Bummer

It would be from 65 to 67 and the frame number should start CM90 or 91 ,if you put the first 3 numbers after that I may be able to find the age of the bike
