Trying to identify year of C90

Post by Tom1989 » Thu Nov 24, 2022 6:34 pm

Hello all,
Im new to the forum, I currently have a Honda S90 and have now purchased a Honda C90 to restore. I have got the bike running well, just need to buy some parts to get it up to scratch. My question is about the frame number on my bike, before I buy any parts I need to find out what year my C90 is. Can this be identified by the frame number? I think its an 80s C90 but could be earlier, the frame number is C90-5132182
Thanks
Tom

C90 51------ started in 1976 so not an 80s bike.

Thanks for your reply,
I found a website that suggests if the vin number starts in 51 then its a C90Z-Z which would be 1979-1981? Not sure how accurate it is. My main reason I would like to know is so I can get the correct parts. I know with my S90 that the parts differ quite a bit depending on the year of the bike. The bike is about 80 percent complete but some parts also need replacing!

Have a look at Boo`s guide viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1098

The main thing is that most parts are the same all the way through the main change was with the gear shift pattern and position of switch gear.

Thanks for the link. From what he mentions about the gearing being different I should be able to at-least know if its a C90Z2 or a C90ZZ. Ive only just got the engine running so haven't actually checked the gearing. But yeah as you said both models have the same parts. Thanks!

Bearing in mind they built 30,000 a month yours is probably not a Z2 but just a C90 built up to 1977.

Just noticed on the engine it says C90E but that could have been added to the bike later, it’s definitely got all the features of a 70s C90

I know more modern C90s take synthetic oil, but would my one take mineral oil? I think the previous owner said they filled it with synthetic but I’ll get that changed if it’s not correct!
Thanks

Any motorbike oil will do, but if they used synthetic stick with that.

Now that I have done Vin to Reg and found the numberplate number it shows that the bike is in fact a 1978. Thanks everyone for your reply's
