Hi guys!

Post by Kevin » Thu Jul 12, 2012 1:54 am

New guy to the forum and to bikes.

I thought the best way to learn about bikes was to buy one, so I ended up buying a Kinroad XT 50 GY.

Turns out no one had ever changed the oil, and the engine was a write off. But as it was a Honda c50 replica, I thought I'd get a proper Honda engine, so bought three C90 Cub engines on ebay for £41 in varying states of completeness.

I figure I'm bound to be able to make one good engine from the three, But herein lies the problem of me not knowing much about taking an engine apart!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi and welcome ,is there a capacity cast into the barrel of the engines and if so what is it so we can help more .6volt 90 is 89cc 12 volt is 85cc. The 12 volt is the one that fits most copies and pit bikes.

Welcome. I didnt know a cub engine fitted a kinroad..... You'll certainly improve the bikes reliability using a honda engine. Which model bike do you have? The sport or the custom? I like the little chop custom. :D

This is the model I have, however I've taken it down to the chassis for powdercoating. (Only taken me a year.)

As for the engines, I can't figure out how to upload pictures from my computer on here, but there's;

One complete engine with a 85cc barrel. (Missing left side crankcase)

One engine complete up to the end of the barrel, so missing a cylinder head (also 85cc barrel)

The last one I'm not sure what cc, as it's missing a barrel, cylinder head and piston.

I was thinking if I could make at least one good engine out of these parts? I was looking at a new Chinese engine, but judging by the quality of the one I had, which looked more like tough plastic than metal I think I'd rather go Honda!

My mate had one of those and it fell apart. If you stripped it down make sure you use lock tight on the wheel nuts, swingarm etc. Also make the wiring loom is well water proofed. The last straw for him was when the petrol tank split down the seam and a crack in the frame (bad weld). On the other hand I have had the xt50 and it was fine. Must be down to which day of the week it was made. The honda engine is a good move, the origional comes with the crate oil and has to be changed straight away some people forget this. Sorry for the downer but as long as you make sure it is solid (frame, tank) and well put together it should last just fine.

You have 2 x 12volt engines with the 85cc barrels. :D You can identify the other by the engine number. 12volt engine starts HA02...... 6volt usually C90E..... :?

Hopefully be able to make a good engine, maybe two. :)

The finish on these bikes is really bad, the frame looks like it's been coloured in with black crayon..

I'm planning to replace the Front forks, rear swingarm and both wheels and brakes with items from a Yamaha DT. I wouldn't trust my life on some of these parts! Thankfully the frame and the rest of the parts look okay.

Engine numbers are;

C90E 5163852, HA02E 1338091 as engine numbers on the two with the left side crankcase, as for the third, no idea, but it's wearing an 85cc cylinder.

You guys are really helping out, I'm planning on giving the engines a steam clean as they're all covered in road gunk. The next step in my plan is to strip them and have the parts vapour blasted, and see what I can re-use!

What do you guys think?
