Re: Elefantentreffen 2010
Thanks Swim.
Oh well, having a nightmare getting ready, I'm booked on the 1pm ferry Monday, still so much to do! I don't have a clue where to stay even.
Tonight the septic tank backed up, hopefully I can get a tanker here in the morning to suk the pootang out, if it has to wait for monday I shall have to aim for tuesday. I really feel there's forces at work here trying to stop me going. I was expecting to buy an electronic translator from Argos this morning, and then I found out it only does a word at a time, and slowly at that!

You'll just have to speak louder and wave your arms around to be understood!Newtsalad wrote: electronic translator from Argos

Re: Elefantentreffen 2010
Translator!!
English is pretty widely spoken, especially in hotels and similar tourist places - you'll be fine! Self depreciating smile and the phrase "Meine Deutsch is nicht sehr gut, kann Sie English sprechen?" (my German is not very good, can you speak English?) should be enough. Well, unless they say "Nein" of course...
Don't order a Bregenwurst (brain sausage) and remember to greet people in Bavaria with "Gruss Gott" instead of "Guten Tag". I think it's OK to mention the war, but possibly not as a conversation starter.
Yours most jealously (although I'm off to Bavaria myself in June)
Ben

Re: Elefantentreffen 2010
Just looking for somewhere to stay on the first night, found this hotel, but not very welcoming is it! Surely no way to address a prospective client....
